Working Drawings

In these more refined drawings, I am still in the design stage. The geese are in the same pose in both ideas, but the geese are in different positions within the picture. These working drawings are part of the process of producing a studio painting.

This great river runs through the Lamar Valley before it joins the Yellowstone River. This is the best place in the park to see wolves and bison.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City

My last post talked about my many months of drawing at the American Museum of Natural History. This was a wonderful experience that helped my drawing skills and knowledge of animal anatomy. Also, the experience was so much fun. To visit the museum's website go to http://www.amnh.org/

ENJOY!!!

Animal Anatomy at the Museum of Natural History in New York City

Drawing at the Museum

Whitetail Deer from the Museum of Natural History
Years ago, I took a great class at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. We studied animal anatomy from the diaramas after the museum closed. I returned every Tuesday for 18 months to draw and study the animals exhibits.

Red Fox was drawn from a recorded nature show

My wife, Kim, used to make VCR tapes of any animal shows on television. I used to run these in slow motion so that I can draw from them.

Canada Goose was drawn from the backyard

This led to sketching at zoos, which led, in turn to drawing in the field at places such as Yellowstone National Park and even my backyard.

Sketching in Nature

Recently, I have been invited to join this award winning blog called Skethcing in Nature. This is an an honor that I am proud to accept. See the full blog at http://naturesketchers.blogspot.com/ . I look forward to being a part of a group of such talented artists.

Outdoor Sketches

Pen Sketches

These sketches are done with the same pen and paper. They are done on location outdoors quickly, but not as quick as the tumbnails. They range from 5 to 8 inches.

Outdoor Sketches

These are Thumbnails on Layout Paper

These thumbnails are just ideas in my head that I have to get out onto paper. They are done from nature in minutes if not seconds, they range from 2 to 3 inches, and are done on really thin layout paper. I use a black Pilot G-2 pen, which I love the feel of on this paper.

The Loss of My Studio by Hurricane Irene

In July of 2011, I was in the process of moving my studio.  I had stored most of it in my garage.  Unfortunately I had no idea that four weeks later Hurricane Irene was to dump ten inches of rain in a short time.  I had forty-two inches of water running through my garage.  Having not prepared for this I had lost most everything in a matter of hours.  Thirty-five years of sketchbooks, drawings and paintings, frames, canvas, and an extensive art book library.

Needless to say this was a devastating and traumatic experience.  I have not painted since that dreadful day.  Although I have started drawing some lately, maybe a good sign.

Most of my posts will be from old slides of my work  that I was able to salvage.  Up until now I have not shared much of my work although two years ago I started a website.  www.jaredclackner.com

Now I feel the importance of having people see what I do.  I've concluded that creative images is who I am.  May way of communicating things that I like and am interested in.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY MY WORK.
